Supply and Demand of Greed

One of today’s political issues is the rising cost of higher education. I will explore the topic from the perspective of greed from both sides of the argument, and leave the viewer with his/her own thoughts to churn through. My video will not take a particular side. Both are to be criticized through perspective. The goal will be to create a negative reaction, creating political tension out of an (hopefully) unbiased video. I see today how politics creates many negative emotions on social media. Users are all too ready to share a video or article supporting their views. I want to create something does not vouch for either side and see if viewers become more opened or closed minded.

I’ll be taking some footage from elementary school’s and overlaying them with political speeches over the last couple decades (or few if needed) and other commentary on the topic. My visuals will come from http://www.pond5.com/stock-video-footage/1/school.html#1 and https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=rising+cost+of+education, but it’s too early to know exactly where I will be taking audio from.

The video will begin with commentary condemning rising costs of education, since this video will mostly be viewed by college students, and then alternate back and forth with the other side of the aisle.

I would like to make my video seem dark by adding color layers and visual effects to distort images. I do not know how to do this yet so it will be my goal of the project. This desired visual effect layered with commentary will emulate a political ad one might see during an election race to undermine the competition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDT-LN5-Edw The goal of these TV ads is to get the viewer to take the stance of the video by making the other side seem incompetent or evil. It usually comes off as cheesy, but I want my video to have the familiarity of a mainstream political ad.

Video Proposal

When I was looking at creative commons videos on the Prelinger Archives there were a lot of videos about drug awareness. So for my video I decided to focus on the issue of drug addiction. I want to alternate these old videos on drug addiction (attached is an example of this type of video) with videos from more modern times that romanticize drugs/provide insight into views on drugs today. I’m considering using music videos as the modern videos in this project. I want to use the song “Heroin Music” by Grieves (attached), but I’m not sure if there are additional songs I want to use.

The point of this video is not to endorse drugs but to bring awareness to drug addiction. I want the viewer to see the different opinions people have on drugs and how views have changed over time because I want to focus on vintage videos from around 1950. I want the video evoke a somber feeling that makes the viewer think.

I don’t have any experience with video editing, so I want to keep this video simple. I will mostly use the techniques of cutting out short clips and as well as things such as repetiton, and slowing down and speeding up clips. A concern I have about my video is that I want to incorporate video clips with sound and also a song with lyrics. I don’t want either to distract from the other so I need to figure out how to do this in a smart way.

Pittsburgh Civic Pride Mix

In this project, I am attempting to create a short video of the city of Pittsburgh that showcases the history, scenery, and local flavor of the area. Most of the sources of the video that I will be using are Vimeo and Youtube sources (listed below) that were shot by either organizations around the area or people that live within the city’s vicinity. The challenge will be to put together both professional and amateur footage in a way that is cohesive and blended into a presentable product.

Using the source material that I gather from around the web, I plan to create a tourism advertisement. With additional effects such as title cards, overlays, and transitions between video scenes, opacity adjustments, and filters, I will attempt to capture the essence of what makes Pittsburgh special to its citizens — whether that is the environment, the food, the art, or the local culture. The end goal is to entice people to learn more about the city and coordinate a visit to see it in person and to express my own civic pride. That will be accomplished by the pastiche that I create with the materials and the call to action at the end of the clip (to visit the tourism bureau’s website/visit the city today).

Technically, the creation of the video will require the ability to slice segments out of pre-existing clips in multiple formats (downloaded and captured from their source), the addition of transitions and fades between those segments, the overlaying of title cards and descriptions, plus the layering or mixing of multiple audio tracks. I know how to do some of these things already, but will require additional research on text overlays and audio mixing within Adobe Premiere.

Motivational Video Propsal

Motivation is something that we all seek in order to give us the mentality to do something, or to accomplish our goals. In order to assist people in finding the motivation to complete tasks and reach their goals I will be taking footage and audio from athletes, scholars, and other individuals that many esteem to be like. I will obtain my footage from places like the following:
-http://www.learnoutloud.com/content/blog/archives/2009/01/to_give_you_a_b.php

I would like to alter the footage in such a way so that the viewer feels empowered and confident after watching the finished product. I will arrange the footage and audio, so that there is some interplay between the speeches. In this I mean that the content of the speeches may run together in order to make them seem seamless and almost like it is one speech that is being read by many individuals. This audio will overlay footage of some great accomplishments that have been achieved over the course of time.

The reaction that I am looking to evoke from my audience is a sense of hopefulness and accomplishment. I’m hoping that every individual that views this remix will see it as an opportunity to better themselves and succeed in every facet of there lives.

In terms of video editing techniques I plan to use various transitions and filter on the footage in order to engage the viewer in an exciting and emotional manner. At the same time I plan to use audio as a very significant source of empowerment to compliment the theme of the overall production. I’ve have employed these techniques in my previous work in video editing and see no obstacle in path aside from learning the overall interface of Adobe Premier Pro in a Macintosh Operating System. I look forward to empowering individuals with my production.

Video Project Proposal — Robo-rave

For my video assignment, I’m going to keep chugging forward with the idea I had for the short video clips we made in our last class. I want to use robots and turntables to create some kind of remix, most likely a song of sorts. I will utilize the different sounds the robots make along with different music as the audio for my video. I hope to honor the late and great David Bowie in my video by using one of his songs, probably either Space Oddity or Under Pressure. I plan on using turntable footage I have already found that is creative commons and add in famous robot footage that I’ll most likely find on YouTube, like that of BB8, Robby the Robot, and Noo-noo (the Teletubbies robot). I’ll probably rip the audio tracks off of YouTube videos as well. The kind of reaction I’m looking for with this video is one of nostalgic joy and the usual amazement that accompanies someone watching something that seems out of this world. I want my video to take my viewers on an adventure where all their old robot buddies from their childhood and beyond get together and throw down a nasty beat. I still don’t know much about video editing techniques yet, but I know I’m going to need to learn how to lay a different audio track over a video track so that I can have the song in the background at all times. I plan on cutting up different scenes with robots in them to make it look like they’re all collaborating together to make a song. If I have enough time, I’ll try to have different video footage even for repeated parts of the song. I also hope to mess around in some of the after effects and see if I can find a way to fade my video in and out to go with the beat to my song. Hopefully it all works out for the best.

Old technology remix

For my remix project, I would like to compile clips of old technology and create a song out of the sounds from those clips (or at least layer repeated video clips with other music to create a new song). While I was searching through the Creative Commons clips last week, I noticed how many videos seemed to be lost and forgotten. Many videos of technology are out of date but are time capsules to how technology was in the past. All of the beeps, switches, and typewriter clicks might make for a good song and an interesting way to revitalize unused video clips. Gathering inspiration from Daft Punk’s Technologic, I want to see how technology can be a new kind of instrument.

For that reason, I will mainly use very short clips (around one second each) together and in rapid repetition. I have some experience editing on Adobe Premiere, but I haven’t used it in a few years. Using the skills I do have in Premiere, I will take longer videos and find “gems” of sound and use the cut feature on Premiere to slice up the longer videos into tiny segments. I might also try to layer the sounds over one another by having more than one audio track on Premiere. The clips that I plan to use are mostly creative commons. The videos do not need to be perfect in how they were shot because they will be used in such short succession. The goal of my project is to create something that looks and sounds nothing like what the original videos present and, in a way, to make the old new again. This video will hopefully be catchy and evoke a reaction of excitement and enjoyment from its viewers.

Video Project Proposal

It tends to be easier for modern audiences to identify cultural disparities between the present and the past, but present flaws in societal expectations and/or stereotypes are often overlooked and accepted as the norm. The tendency to overlook flaws in present day society often occurs when audiences consume modern media. Viewers are reluctant to critically examine the media they consume, looking only to appreciate its entertainment value. My intent is to isolate one issue, sexism, and show its subtle and sometimes not so subtle presence in modern media (primarily video, however audio clips may also be used). My initial plan is to find clips from each decade of the past century, cutting them together to lead up to clips from present day. My hope is that by viewing the clips one after another from such distinctly different time periods, the thematic similarities between clips will highlight the prevalence of sexism in modern times.

Ideally my video would cause viewers to be reflective. Viewers would feel compelled not only to reflect on the authenticity of the claim made in my video (that sexism is still prevalent and not as strongly overcome as we may think), but also to think about the media they consume and if problematic themes and motifs are overlooked.

I won’t need to learn any new video editing techniques. I already know how to cut various clips, which will be the primary technique needed for this project, and lay music underneath the clips, if necessary. I may need to learn how to insert text into the video, but I don’t anticipate that being an especially challenging technique to learn.

The use of clips from the past will be helpful in accumulating video sources that are within the public domain as many video sources from the 1900’s have expired copyrights. The catalyst for my video is an audio clip of Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in which he makes the claim that sexism is a “dead” issue, politicized for a liberal agenda.

Video Project Proposal

After careful consideration of topics that I would what to show the world, I realized there is no better topic for me then climate change. As to what aspects of climate change I will focus on, I will just have to see where the project takes me.

I considered what types of media I would use. I do have a favorite informational video on why we (the United States) need to address environmental concerns. I would use pieces of his audio with different video that paints a more vivid image. Ultimately I need people to stop denying climate change because it is easier to swallow. This idea is from Big Oil pushing their best interest on our economy, by brainwashing the people.

Here is the link to the above mentioned video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zORv8wwiadQ

I would want to focus on videos of the earth in different stages. Mostly utilizing the slice feature of premiere and moving clips and audio around.

The message I would like to get across in this piece is the danger that we pose to our ecosystem, and in turn ourselves. I have always believed in this quote:

“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers but borrowed from his children.” -Audubon

The quote really spoke to me. I think about future generations, even my future offspring living in a different world than us, since we ruined this one. They should get to enjoy the beauty of the earth in the same way that we do. We should learn from the past generations, and see that the trajectory of their decisions is heading in a dire direction. I’m glad I will have a chance to create the message I want to portray to my audience.

Video Project

For my video project, I will be editing footage from the video game series, Call of Duty. I will be using segments from a current video contest and cinematics that will be recorded by me through screen capture. I would like to make a montage of sorts with all of these clips. I want my viewers to be in shock or awe of how good the video compositing and editing is. I will be using two main programs: Adobe Premiere and After Effects. If possible, I will download certain plugins such as twixtor, twitch, Magic Bullet looks, and hopefully RSMB, or Real Smart Motion Blur. These effects help make a video look extremely professional. For example, Magic Bullet looks include flares which are often used by famous director, J.J Abrams or Michael Bay.

The first part of this montage, will include an introduction. The introduction will include cinematics in order for the viewer to get a good grasp of what is going to happen. Furthermore, I have also chosen the song “Atmosphere – The Ropes” to go along with these clips. As for the editing segment, I plan on using Magic Bullet looks for the color correction. Twixtor will allow extremely smooth slow motion especially because the video sources are in 59.94 fps. Next, there will be many “pump” effects occurring throughout the video that are completely in sync with the music. This “pump” effect is achieved through using the scale effect in Premiere or After Effects.

Lastly, besides using plugins I will also be using effects already in After Effects. For example, I will be using directional blur and motion tile. Motion tile will be used for transitions and directional blur will be used for creating a blur effect in combination with the “pump” effect. I have used these effects before, so I will know how to use them as effectively as possible to create an extremely professional video.
