Video Proposal

When I was looking at creative commons videos on the Prelinger Archives there were a lot of videos about drug awareness. So for my video I decided to focus on the issue of drug addiction. I want to alternate these old videos on drug addiction (attached is an example of this type of video) with videos from more modern times that romanticize drugs/provide insight into views on drugs today. I’m considering using music videos as the modern videos in this project. I want to use the song “Heroin Music” by Grieves (attached), but I’m not sure if there are additional songs I want to use.

The point of this video is not to endorse drugs but to bring awareness to drug addiction. I want the viewer to see the different opinions people have on drugs and how views have changed over time because I want to focus on vintage videos from around 1950. I want the video evoke a somber feeling that makes the viewer think.

I don’t have any experience with video editing, so I want to keep this video simple. I will mostly use the techniques of cutting out short clips and as well as things such as repetiton, and slowing down and speeding up clips. A concern I have about my video is that I want to incorporate video clips with sound and also a song with lyrics. I don’t want either to distract from the other so I need to figure out how to do this in a smart way.

Wow that’s such a unique idea! It sounds like you have a good understanding of the new meaning you want to get by remixing those videos. I think your direction is solid, but I have a couple questions. Will you be using videos of just drug addiction or also of drug use in general? I think it’d be interesting to have some videos of drug use as well because I think that will really show the difference between modern and past drug addiction. Also, will you be focusing just on heroin or on other drugs as well? I think it would be interesting to explore other hard drugs as well, especially rave drugs (as they are making this huge comeback nowadays). Just some suggestions (: Good luck on your project!!

I like this idea because it takes something that everyone knows about but may not understand all sides of the issue. In addition, it is refreshing to see new perspectives on something, especially if it is as controversial as drug addiction and usage. As a previous comment said, showing differences between modern and past drug addiction is something I would be interested in seeing, especially if you were able to draw upon some of the more “hysterical” types of film from the past (such as this classy piece from 1951: https://archive.org/details/DrugAddi1951).

This sounds like a really interesting idea! I think it’s a topic that can definitely generate emotion and people will want to talk about the topic because it’s relevant in our lives as college students. I honestly am not very informed about drug usage in the past so I think this will idea will both educate and facilitate information on drugs and addiction for people our age.
