Final Project-Carsten

For my final project I plan on making a creative “fan fiction” based on the Avengers. Age of Ultron specifically. I have never written a fan fiction before but after seeing Age of Ultron, the character and story of Scarlet Witch really interested me. I had an idea for an emotional story that takes place after Quicksilver’s death. In the film, she reacted very powerful way and I plan on adding to that. She immediately killed every Ultron robot around her in the aftermath because of her anger. I wanted to delve deeper in to her reaction of her brother’s death. The story would involve, without spoiling too much, how she is dealing with this day to day within herself. The pair were inseparable, so clearly one half without the other will cause some emotional turmoil for her. I will display (my own idea) of how she is dealing with it, and won’t turn out so pretty. I thought this would be a good way of personally testing out the section of fandom, our second unit. This obviously deals with Joss Whedon, as it is within his Avengers world. Whedon’s fan base is big in the fan creation world, so I thought it would be interested adding my own work into that. I shouldn’t have much trouble taking the idea in my head and translating it paper. It’s a story i’m very excited to write so I think it will be a fun experience not only or class but as a personal project.

The fan fiction that I will be speaking about: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11280990/1/Sleep-and-24-Hour-Supermarkets

This is a fan fiction about the Avengers and really what what happens during their free time. It is a “cute” fan fiction but it feels kind of useless. For one thing, the Avengers are not known to spend much time together outside of conflict. At the end of each film, most of them go their separate ways back home. Other than say, Captain America who lives and breathes the battle every day (through training or whatever else). But Iron Man and Thor, they go back to their homes and have their own adventures outside of the Avengers. The Avengers are supposed to exist to battle, something that Tony Stark very much so believes in. To believe that they would all get together to go grocery shopping instead of protecting is silly. Although, it could be during a time of peace. The story is very harmless but kinda of feels like it doesn’t need to exist. The author says that this could possibly be an alternate universe story or set in canon, but either way it is not very important. I feel as if these kind of “silly/harmless/unimportant” fan fictions fit in the same category of the sexual fan fictions. They are both not to be taken very seriously and are simply odd for any non fan fiction reader like myself. I feel as if these are an acquired taste, and for those that do enjoy them, they are tons of fun. Otherwise, the experience of reading one is lukewarm. Fantastic fan fictions do exist, and those tend to be the ones that take themselves seriously.

Avengers – Black Widow Interrogation Scene

I will be analyzing the first scene in the Avengers and talking about how it succeeds. Here is a link to the scene in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OJqPJRjHkE (Only goes to about 0:44)

This scene’s strongest trait is it’s use of parallel editing. Black Widow and Agent Coulson are clearly in two different areas, but the film is able to create a strong sense of them being together even though they are apart. Black Widow begins this clip already on the phone, being “interrogated” by the Russians. She is trying to learn as much as possible from them by listening to what information they simply give her. She knows she has the upper hand and once she learns that Hawkeye has been compromised and her help is needed, she begins fighting while attached to the chair. The fight scene is badass on it’s own, as she takes out all of the men on herself while strapped to a chair, but this isn’t the biggest deal in this scene. That would be while Phil is on the phone, hearing all of the fighting. It creates a nice sense of humor, since you imagine Coulson sitting there and simply listening to her fight. The cut to Coulson staring at the ground while listening is just a hilarious situation that a viewer could not help but laugh. Using techniques like parallel editing, one can achieve a well placed and paced joke like such. I’m not sure how much Whedon actually uses this editing device, but I will make sure to look for it more in his work to see if it is a trope of his.
